Virtual Network Engineer

 X8 seeks a cyber-systems expert with an understanding of virtual and cloud systems, such as VMware, Virtual Box, GovCloud, AWS C2S, or other cloud environments to lead the planning and technical implementation of a joint development environment. The selectee will provide technical, operational and strategic guidance to modernize and improve a large software development pipeline. They will evaluate and recommend hardware and software solutions to enable virtual machines and associated technologies, that leverage cross domain solutions to unify processes for developing cyber capabilities. X8 SME and Engineers work with a smart, dynamic and growing DoD customer, actually changing how cyber operations are conducted.  This position directly supports operations and the fielding of operational capabilities being deployed now.  

Network Engineers will:  

  • Guide the development and integration of an enterprise-level, software development environment.
  • Serve as the hub for programmatic and technical decision making, advocating for industry best practices and leveraging lessons learned from years of working in cyber operational environments.  
  • Ensure project planning meets the rigorous demands of automation, user satisfaction and effectiveness through interactions with developers and the customer. 
  • Conduct operational research projects, assess other systems, document opinions and help integrate new capabilities into a larger cyberspace architecture.   
  • Assess the technical solutions of contract performers, edit requirements and design technical solutions to meet the operational needs of the users and the customer.   
  • Ensure operating criteria are met by software and hard ware deployments.  
  • Monitor the installation and testing of solutions to ensure they meet goals and requirements of the of the customer  
  • Provides informed advocacy, writing, and teamwork with other cyberspace SMEs to help think beyond normal boundaries to problem solve deployment issues on site and to propose solutions that needs of the customer.  


  • Understanding of multiple virtual systems such as e.g. VMware, Virtual Box and how to implement instantiations of virtual networks.
  • At least one year experience working in GovCloud, AWS C2S, or other cloud environment
  • Understanding of leading technologies such as Platform as a Service (PaaS), hardware, software, software development techniques, and internet protocols.
  • Understand Application Programming Interfaces (API) and associated Software Development Kits (SDK) to evaluate interoperability with external enabling components, e.g. access/connectivity infrastructures, tools
  • Familiarization with dataflows within the DoD or IC and be familiar with the existing frameworks and concepts associated with moving data to support existing analytic and storage capabilities.
  • Familiarization with CI/CD pipelines that deliver new software throughout the development life cycle via automation.
  • Experience as a developer or leading developers under an agile software methodology such as SAFe or SCRUM
  • Polygraph within the last 4 years
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with technical and non-technical leaders 
  • Knowledge of IT Security concepts, standards, and methods with the ability to understand and contribute to solution architectures 
  • Knowledge of various Operating Systems, both Windows and *NIX variants (i.e. Windows 10, CentOS, Kali, Ubuntu, RedHat, etc…) 

Highly Desired: 

  • Experience working with USCYBERCOM offensive cyberspace operations (OCO) infrastructures  
  • Understanding of DoD and/or IC cyber operations processes 
  • Completion of Windows or Linux Certifications or equivalent experience 
  • Familiarity with programming in scripting languages like (Perl, Python, Shell, PowerShell, etc.), experience with code review and testing of the above languages above mentioned desired.


  • BS/MS in a technical field like; Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems or Software Engineering).   
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience as an Information Technology Specialist, Network Specialist, Cybersecurity Analyst, etc. 
  • No Degree?  No worries – three (3) additional years relevant experience as an Information System specialist (as described above)  
  • At least ONE (1) of the following certifications or similar
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 
  • CompTIA Security+ (SEC+) 
  • CompTIA Network+ (NET+) 
  • AWS Certified Advanced Networking. 
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA)


  • TS/SCI/Poly required for immediate consideration  

Location:  Fort Meade, MD

Travel: This position will operate primarily out of Fort Meade, MD area, with some travel to sites in the local area. Travel to San Antonio, TX or Augusta, GA may be required once or twice a year.
